Qatar Steel Co. (Qasco) selected Danieli Centro Met for the major upgrading and expansion of its meltshop in order to add approximately 600,000 tpy of production capacity for commercial and quality steel billets.
The project, to be carried out on a complete turnkey basis, includes the supply of a new 80-t Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), two ladle furnaces and a 4-strand billet continuous casting suitable for submerged casting operation. The project also includes the major upgrading of one of the existing EAF’s.
The turnkey supply also includes auxiliary equipment and services such as cranes, fume and water treatment plants, electric substation and the extension of the existing buildings.
The Italian supplier Danieli & C., was founded in the year 1914 and was one of the first Italian companies which used electric arc furnaces for the steel production.The company has gradually expanded by changing from steel production to the manufacture of equipment for the steel industry as well as engineering and supply of turnkey plants. It is a pioneer in the development of the minimill concept.
Today’s Danieli’s production range, with company-owned technology, covers the equipment for the whole steel making process cycle. Over 3,400 people operate in the 17 product lines. Main Group companies are located in Italy, Sweden, Germany, USA, UK, Spain, France and The Netherlands.
Average turnover is approx 1.6 billion US dollars, of which over 98% is meant for export.
Danieli has acquired the absolute leadership in terms of plant supply in the Middle East region as proven by the projects recently under implementation such as Hadeed and Al-Yamamah rolling mills, Al-Rajhi steel plant and Unicoil galvanizing line in Saudi Arabia, the Sonasid minimill plant in Morocco and the stainless steel cold mill complex in Bahrain for a total sales volume exceeding 800 million US dollars.
Qasco and Danieli intend to enlarge their partnership for the future expansion plans which will put Qasco in a prominent position in the supply of steel materials in Qatar and in the neighbouring countries, making it one of the most advanced and productive steelmakers in the whole region. The project will be completed in 2006.
